The Lime Tree of Orino
Behind green monuments often lie stories that make them unique. Such is the case with the enchanting Orino lime tree, a symbol of freedom.
Entering the village of Orino from the road coming from Brinzio and Valcuvia, you are greeted by the immense foliage of the centuries-old linden tree in front of the charming little church of San Lorenzo.
The monumental tree amazes with its branches and size, but also with its history. Tradition has it that it was planted in 1848 as a symbol of freedom and independence in the square of the small town, which lies at the foot of the Campo dei Fiori mountain massif.
However, to avoid a reaction from the Austrians, it was decided to move the tree to a then peripheral location, where, away from prying eyes, freedom speeches could be held under its crown.
The large lime tree, which today has reached a trunk circumference of almost 4 m (diameter 125 cm), is beloved for its bearing and landscape role.
It is also the ideal starting point for venturing along the trails of the Campo dei Fiori regional park in Varese, particularly in the direction of the viewpoint of the Forte di Orino, famous for its priceless panorama.
